Our ears play a major part in how our face looks as a whole.

Our ears have a huge impact on the shape of our face and a lot of people become insecure about them.

The ears play a big role in our lives; not only do they grant us the ability to hear but they can also play a major part in how our face looks as a whole. There are many reasons why a person may feel self-conscious of their ears, and it's not uncommon for patients to have suffered name-calling as a child because of the size or shape of their ears. If you feel it's time to tackle your prominent ears then there is something you can do to improve them long term – otoplasty (pinnaplasty).

Our ears have a huge impact on the shape of our face and a lot of people become insecure about them - especially if they are ‘sticking-out’ - and so they turn to otoplasty. The eventual objective is to produce a balanced and symmetrical or even looking result, leaving no noticeable sign of surgery.

“My experience with Mr Ahmed was excellent. He was endlessly patient with me during the consultation process, and listened to my concerns. He was helpful and professional throughout.”

This procedure is performed generally as a day-case either under a local or general anaesthetic. An incision is placed in the groove behind the ear between the ear and head. The cartilage is reshaped by placing stitches and sometimes taking small pieces of cartilage out and weakening the cartilage by scoring it. The incision is closed with a stitch and a protective head bandage applied. This bandage is usually removed after 7 days and you are advised to wear a head bandage at night for a further few weeks. The recovery period following surgery is generally short so you will be able to resume your normal activities usually around a week after surgery.

The results should be noticeable straight away, although there will be some bruising and swelling. Mr Ahmed will offer you advice on tackling daily activities that affect your ears such as washing/drying your hair. Scars are very small and are hidden in the creases of the ear so that they aren’t noticeable to the casual observer. The objective of the surgery is to produce a balanced and less prominent appearance of the ears.

You will need to have a full consultation with Mr Ahmed who will tailor your treatment to ensure the results are natural and harmonious with the rest of your face.

Like all cosmetic treatments, it's important that patients are aware of the risks and possible side-effects involved with the treatment; pinnaplasty surgery is no different. The risks involved with pinnaplasty include infection, scarring, loss of skin sensation and in some really rare cases blood clots. These risks are extremely rare to encounter but should still be carefully considered by all patients before making the decision to undergo treatment.
